거스키의 작품을 마주했을 때 우리는 그 거대함에 놀라고, 또 그 세부에 나타난 인간과 현대 사회의 모습에 경외감을 느낀다. 거스키 작품의 기념비적 규모는 사진 예술에 있어 혁신에 가까운 변화이자 두려움과 숭고함을 느끼게 하는 근원적 요소이다. 과거에 인류가 두려워했던 것은 자연, 신과 같이 인간의 힘이 미칠 수 없는 대상이었다. 그러나 현대에 이르면 두려움의 대상은 기술의 발전이 가져오는 급격한 변화, 자본주의 권력, 글로벌리즘 등이다. 현대식 공장, 증권거래소 대형 건물 등을 촬영한 거스키의 사진에서 무한히 반복되는 건축적 구조는 인간이 저항할 수 없는 거대한 권력을 상징하며 이를 마주한 관객은 작지만 뚜렷하게 보이는 인간의 모습에서 숭고한 감정을 느끼게 된다.

Confronting Gurskys works viewers are initially amazed by their sode then awed by their detailed depiction of modern human society.
